Wei XiaoBao

Wei Xiaobao: The Unlikely Hero of the Qing Court

Wei Xiaobao (韦小宝) is the protagonist of Jin Yong’s comedic masterpiece “The Deer and the Cauldron” (鹿鼎记). Unlike the noble, martial-arts-master heroes of Jin Yong’s other works, Wei Xiaobao is a cunning, illiterate, morally flexible rogue who rises from the slums of Yangzhou to become one of the most powerful men in the Qing Empire. He is a character who succeeds through wit, luck, and sheer audacity.

From the Slums to the Imperial Palace

Wei Xiaobao’s story begins in the brothels of Yangzhou, where he grew up as a street urchin. His mother was a prostitute, and he knew nothing of his father. He survived through quick thinking, lying, gambling, and fighting dirty. He had no martial arts skills, no education, and no connections.

His life took a dramatic turn when he befriended a wounded rebel, Mao Shiba, and later, by a stroke of pure luck, found himself disguised as a eunuch inside the Forbidden City. He was assigned to serve the Kangxi Emperor, who was only a teenager at the time.

A Friendship with the Emperor

Unaware of each other’s true identities at first, Wei Xiaobao and the young Emperor Kangxi became close friends. They wrestled, played, and confided in each other. When Wei Xiaobao discovered that his “friend” was the Emperor, he was terrified but continued to serve him loyally.

Using his street smarts, Wei Xiaobao helped Kangxi defeat the powerful minister Oboi, who had been controlling the court. For his service, he was given high-ranking positions and became one of the Emperor’s most trusted aides.

Double Agent: Serving Two Masters

Here begins the hilarious and dangerous double life of Wei Xiaobao. While serving the Qing Emperor, he was also accidentally inducted into the Tiandihui (Heaven and Earth Society), a secret organization dedicated to overthrowing the Qing dynasty and restoring the Ming. He became one of its leaders.

Now, Wei Xiaobao had to serve two opposing masters: the Emperor he genuinely liked and the rebels who believed in him. He played both sides brilliantly, feeding false information to each, making his fortune, and ensuring his own survival.

Love, Marriage, and a Harem

Wei Xiaobao had a voracious appetite for beautiful women. Throughout his adventures, he married seven wives, each from different backgrounds and with distinct personalities:

  • Shuang’er: His gentle and loyal maid.
  • Fang Yi: A refined and elegant lady.
  • Mu Jianping: A fierce woman from a noble Ming family.
  • Jian Ning: A princess of the former Ming dynasty.
  • Zeng Rou: A tender and loving girl.
  • Princess Jianning: The Emperor’s sister, a violent and spoiled princess.
  • Ah Ke: The daughter of a legendary hero.

His relationships with his wives were often as chaotic and humorous as the rest of his life.

The Ultimate Survivor

Wei Xiaobao’s greatest talent was survival. Time and again, he found himself in impossible situations, surrounded by powerful enemies who wanted him dead. Whether it was his martial arts master, the fearsome Haidafu, or the rebels who suspected him of betrayal, Wei Xiaobao always managed to talk, bribe, or bluff his way out.

He was a master of manipulation and deception, but beneath his cunning exterior, he had a code of honor: he always protected his friends and never forgot his mother.

A Legendary Escape

In the end, Wei Xiaobao could no longer maintain his double life. The truth of his deception was about to be exposed. He had to choose between the Emperor, who was like a brother to him, and the rebels, who believed in him.

Instead of choosing, he made a decision that only someone like him would make: he faked his own death, stole a massive fortune, and escaped with his seven wives to a distant land. He abandoned his titles, his duties, and his fame, but he kept his life and his freedom.

Wei Xiaobao’s Legacy

Wei Xiaobao is perhaps the most unique hero in Jin Yong’s universe. He is not noble, not a master of martial arts, and not a man of honor in the traditional sense. But he is honest about his flaws, fiercely loyal to those he loves, and undeniably clever. He is a hero for the common man, proving that you don’t need strength or education to succeed; you just need wit, luck, and courage.

His story remains a timeless classic, a hilarious and heartwarming tale of the most unlikely hero to ever walk the halls of power.
